It's hundreds of years of colonial arrogance that's been flipped over into post-colonial guilt. We desperately <i>want</i> to win stuff, it's just that deep down we know that if we do then nobody will <i>like</i> us anymore... :) And on those grounds Sven Goran Eriksson should be hailed as a national hero for oh, so narrowly preventing us from having to go through the collective psychic anguish of actually winning the World Cup. I might have known :). I should also point out that it is always important to beat the Aussies at anything and everything. I think this negative mentality is not, sadly, confined to cricket.
